讲座内容简介：This lecture compares our response to tragic drama (Greek, Shakespeare, modern plays) and our response to tragic situations in the world and explores the relationship between the two. It asks questions about the value of tragedy, about the need to bear the witness to atrocity and the dangers of spectatorship and compassion fatigue. Is shock necessary for tragic effect? Have we lost our sense of shock? What are the constraints which make watching tragedy possible? The lecture explores these questions, among others, through some reading of Greek and Shakespearean tragedy and through contemporary visual culture.

主讲人简介：Dr Jennifer Wallace is the author of the recently published book, The Cambridge Introduction to Tragedy (Cambridge University Press). She is a lecturer in English Literature at Cambridge University, and fellow and Director of Studies in English at Peterhouse, Cambridge. She graduated from Cambridge University with a joint degree in Classics and English, and has since held a postdoctoral research fellowship at Clare College, Cambridge, and visiting research posts (Leverhulme Study Abroad fellowship) at the University of California, Berkeley and at Columbia University, New York. Her previous publications include Shelley and Greece: Rethinking Romantic Hellenism (1997) and Digging the Dirt: The Archaeological Imagination (2004).
